More than 1,000 dead birds fall out of the sky in Arkansas; streets covered with black bird corpses

Why only redwinged blackbirds?  Nearly 5000 birds–all falling dead at the same time–seems to rule out disease, unless it is a very aggressive and lightning quick disease. Keith Stephens, a spokesman for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, quoted is a Reuters story had this to say: “It could be weather-related or possibly stress-related… [t]here were some fireworks shot off at midnight and it is possible that the birds were on their roost and stressed so bad that it could have killed them.” No physical injuries were reported on the birds, so what happened?

Meanwhile, 125 miles west in Ozark, Arkansas, an estimated 100,000 drum fish have died along a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River. So far, officials believe disease is to blame. — PID
