Ant megacolony 'takes over the world'


Sounds like science fiction, doesn’t it? But according to researchers in Japan and Spain, the majority of the world’s ants are part of one big family.

Take a look at the ants in your backyard. Could they be part of this enormous colony? What do they know that you don’t? Imagine what might happen if they were able to communicate with each other.

A single mega-colony of ants has colonised much of the world, scientists have discovered.

Argentine ants living in vast numbers across Europe, the US and Japan belong to the same inter-related colony, and will refuse to fight one another.
