No Word. No 'Unveiling'.

Final Update for the day: Nothing from Rome regarding the Ark of the Covenant. The spin is that the Patriarch Pauolos was misquoted or misunderstood. However, the Lord knows where it is, and that’s all that matters. We talk more about it on tonight’s PID Radio.

10:40 am ET UPDATE: We’re keeping an eye on the Adnkronos website for further news of the promised ‘unveiling’. So far, nothing. More if anything turns up. — PID

THE INTERNET is buzzing with anticipation. Ever since 8 am ET, the world has been waiting for an announcement from Rome that the Biblical Ark of the Covenant has been ‘unveiled’. As of this moment, there is no news–so, at the very least, the announcement is late. But here’s what I’ve uncovered so far.

On Monday, PID Radio discussed the possible unveiling event. A listener (Susan — thanks!) had sent us a link to an online translation of the original June 17th Adnkronos article and video wherein Pauolos was said to promise a ‘Friday’ announcement.

Then came rumors that the patriarch was backpedaling. We reported this on PID Radio as well, noting that the Ethiopian cleric appeared to be hedging, claiming he’d been mistranslated and/or misquoted. Curiously, Adnkronos ran this article on June 19th:

Rome – (Adnkronos) – The Orthodox Patriarch of Ethiopia Abuna Pauolos confirmation as early two days ago dall’Adnkronos:”repeat of the Ark is in Ethiopia, and none of us knows how long yet. Only God knows. I am not here to give evidence that the Ark is in Ethiopia, but I am here to say what I have seen”

Yesterday, World Net Daily reported that the ark was indeed about to be unveiled. Now, dozens of other internet sites are repeating the drumbeat.

Is the ark about to be ‘unveiled’? I did an online search for any information about it this morning. There isn’t much, but an interesting article with a different ‘take’ written by Hillel Fendel of has now appeared at The Ethiopian Review:

Ethiopian Orthodox Church leader says Friday, June 26, marks the right time to unveil the Biblical Ark of the Covenant, which he says has been hidden in his church for centuries.

Abuna Pauolos Aba Gebremedhin (aka Aba Diabilos), the illegitimate Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, was in Rome this week to meet with Pope Benedict XVI. While there, he told reporters that the time had come to reveal before the world the Holy Ark. He said that the holy container has been in the custody of his church for hundreds of years.

Curious that Pauolos is referred to as Gebremedhin and Diabilos in this account. What is meant by ‘illegitimate Patriarch’? Presumably, if the man referred to in most media accounts (what few there are) as ‘Pauolos’ has been received by the Pope, then most of the clerical world considers him legitimate.

‘Gebremedhin’ may be his true surname and Pauolos his ‘patriarchal’ name. But most certainly ‘Aba Diabilos’ (Father Devil?) is not one he’d have assumed on his own!

As of this moment, we’re all still awaiting further word. PID News will publish any updates to this story as they develop. Stay tuned…
