Petraeus Visits Lebanon

Aug 6, 2008 (EDEBKAfile) — The US Iraq commander Gen. David Petraeus, soon to be promoted to Central Command chief, arrived unannounced in Lebanon on Wed. Aug 6. DEBKAfile’s military sources report he came to check out the strategic ramifications of Hizballah’s seizure on behalf of Syria and Iran of two strategic Lebanese peaks, Mt. Sannine and Mt. Barukh. Be sure to read this article. Notice that the Patraeus visit was unannounced (perhaps for security reasons). It could be that the good general is merely sizing up the situation in regions he’ll soon have command over — or perhaps he delivered a message from Washington. With Olmert about to leave office, an entirely new script is being written. Wholescale war could erupt before the end of the year — perhaps even before fall.
