U.S. carriers sent toward Taiwan before election

Is the US merely ‘training’ near Taiwan, or is this more likely a show of force to the Chinese? The Nimitz and Essex Strike Groups are also in the Pacific now. With this weekend’s Taiwan elections and China’s military build-up in Tibet, is it possible the US and perhaps even Britain (note that the Dalai Lama is visiting with PM Brown and Prince Charles) are poised to intervene? This weekend’s election there includes a referendum to join the UN under the name Taiwan — a show of ‘independence’ and a slap at the ‘one China policy’. Let’s not forget that President Bush once vowed to “do whatever it takes” to defend Taiwan if China should become a threat. — PID

Mar 20, 2008 WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Two U.S. aircraft carriers, including the USS Kitty Hawk, have been sent to the Taiwan region for training exercises during this weekend’s Taiwanese election, a U.S. defense official said on Wednesday. The two warships were “responsibly positioned” in the Pacific Ocean somewhere east of Taiwan and would remain in place through Saturday’s presidential election and referendum on U.N. membership, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
